The busy month continues for the volunteers here at the Westhampton Beach Fire Department. On July 10, around 10am the tones dropped for a reported structure fire at 166 Mill Road. Third Assistant Chief Kevin Raynor arrived on scene within 2 minutes and confirmed to dispatch of an active fire in the cockloft of a 1 story commercial Wine and Liquor store with a small contained rubbish fire on the outside.

Engine 1 arrived on scene and immediately stretched a hand line to the front door while the chauffeur established a positive water source at the hydrant. Ladder 6 arrived moments later and their crew began to search the building and open the ceiling for the engine company. A second hand line was stretched, to backup the first line, and also extinguish the rubbish fire on the outside 1/4 corner of the building. As additional manpower arrived and with the assistance of Eastport, firefighters gained access to the roof and made multiple cuts to vent the structure of heat, smoke and expose the fire in the cockloft. Eastport stretched a hand line off their engine to the roof to extinguish pockets of fire. After the fire was extinguished members began to overhaul the structure to confirm no hidden pockets of fire remained that would reignite the building.

The Eastport Fire Department was automatically notified of the fire due to the daytime structure fire preplan. In addition, Assistant Chief Raynor requested the Quogue Fire Department standby our headquarters with one engine and the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance to the scene for firefighter rehab. The Westhampton Beach Village police were on scene investigating with the assistance of the Southampton Town Fire Marshall's office. All units were back in service at 11:30.
